Nokia 770 Internet Gadget

Nokia 770

Got to hand it to Nokia. Their new Nokia 770 Internet Gadget looks really practical and the launch price of USD$349 will make it a good Tablet PC replacement.

The Nokia 770 is based on Debian Linux v2.6 with a Gnome user interface which they are naming the “Maemo” platform. The platform will be completely open source with a provided SDK for developers (Hurray for Linux lovers). The device will connect to your home network via Bluetooth/WiFi (think StarBucks) and features a nice 4.13-inch LCD screen with widescreen resolution of 800×480. As for built-in applications, expect it bundled with Opera browser, an RSS reader, media players, PDF reader, internet radio, and a flash plug-in. Future plans for a Q1 2006 rollout call for Voice over IP calling (Skype?) and instant messaging clients.

The brains behind it, is a TI 1710 OMAP (ARM based processor) with 64MB of DDR RAM. 128MB of internal flash memory will come standard and if that isn’t enough for you there will be a RS-MMC card slot to expand it (64MB card included).
